Chapter 52: Chapter 052: Discovering the Intent, Third Master is Very Happy
Feng Hua had a silver tongue that made her an important figure among the women in Peng Village, even in the presence of the Village Chief.
Su Shu nodded, smiling, âSorry to bother you, it was inconsiderate of me. I had only asked Boss Yu for the location of Peng Village before coming here, and I neglected to greet you all first. I hope you donât mind.â
Feng Hua waved her hand dismissively, laughing, âNot at all, why would we? Itâs not every day we have such a beautiful young lady pay us a visit. Look, in just a little while, see how many people have gathered outside? Today, the villageâs young men arenât around, otherwise, I guarantee they would have surrounded the village council building!â
Su Shu awkwardly laughed, not quite sure how to respond to that.
Just when she felt a bit embarrassed, someone outside shouted, âGrandpa San!â
Feng Hua stood up. âGrandpa San is here.â
...
On hearing âGrandpa San,â Su Shu knew it must be an elder. She quickly put Xiaoâai down on the ground and stood up as well.
Soon, the door to the village committee room opened and Grandpa San of Peng Village stepped in, wearing his coat.
Feng Hua greeted with a smile, âGrandpa San, youâve arrived.â
Grandpa San grunted in acknowledgment, looking up at Su Shu.
Su Shu, quick to respond with a slight smile, said, âHello.â
Grandpa San nodded his head and took a seat on a chair that Chunlaiâs wife had brought over. He inquired, âDid you come from C City, young lady?â
âYes, I did. I left C City early this morning. I wasnât very clear about the route and took some detours, arriving only in the afternoon.â
âThen youâre quite fortunate. Just yesterday, our village had two visitors from your province.â
Su Shu responded brightly, âReally? That is quite a coincidence.â
What else could she do but go along with the conversation?
Grandpa San asked, âWhatâs your honorable family name?â
Before Su Shu could open her mouth, Feng Hua had already spoken for her, âHer family name is Su, called Su Shu.â
âWhy donât you let the young lady speak for herself?â Grandpa San frowned and asked Su Shu, âHave you eaten lunch?â
âI have.â Su Shu smiled.
In truth, she hadnât eaten. She had only given Xiaoâai some milk and a sandwich.
Grandpa San instructed Feng Hua, âChunlaiâs wife, prepare some food for our guest.â
âAlright.â
After Feng Hua left, Grandpa Sanâs gaze shifted towards Xiaoâai, who was leaning against Su Shuâs legs. A warm smile broke through the sternness of his old face.
âYour daughter?â
âNo, sheâs my niece. Iâm taking care of her.â
Grandpa San nodded his head, not pursuing the matter further. âBefore you arrived, Chunhua, our head of household, mentioned it. Iâm curious what you came to see, Miss Su?â
In the blink of an eye, Su Shu had become âMiss Suâ in Grandpa Sanâs reference, but he was an elder, and she a junior, so there was nothing amiss with being called a young girl (Miss).
Su Shu replied, âIâd like to see the Lake Rice seeds and to look at some quality poultry and mountain goods.â
Grandpa San chuckled, âWell, youâve come to the right place then. Our Peng Village might lack other things, but when it comes to mountain goods, weâve got plenty. The young men went up the mountain for a hunt today. If youâre not in a hurry, Miss Su, why donât you stay for a couple of days and join us for a village meal?â
âA village meal?â Su Shu was momentarily stunned.
âThatâs when the whole village comes together to enjoy a Pork Dish.â
âAh, okay.â
A Pork Dish, alright, she had indeed never tried that before.
The arrival of Su Shu was like a beacon of hope flickering above Peng Village. Everyone in the village knew that the young lady who drove in with a nice car might bring them a good sum of money, and the bumper harvest from last autumn could fetch a good price.
While some were delighted, naturally others were anxious, just like the elders such as Grandpa San, who didnât much agree with the idea of selling grain, especially for some families considering selling their food rations.
However, after probing Su Shuâs intentions, he discovered she wasnât planning to purchase a large amount of grain. Instead, her interest was stronger in seeds and mountain goods like poultry. This relieved a lot of the pressure on Grandpa Sanâs shoulders. Poultry was raised in every householdâchickens, ducks, geese, dogsâyou name it, and if the price was right, there were plenty in Peng Village willing to sell. As for mountain goods, Peng Village was not short on mountains; they lived off the mountains and there was an abundance of mountain produce. Such good deals that could bring income to the villagers were hard to come by. After the chat with Su Shu, even the wrinkles on Grandpa Sanâs face seemed to glow.
