The people causing a ruckus in the bridal chamber eventually dispersed, and the room fell into a sudden quiet. Song Qingshu, swaying slightly, stumbled over to the bed and plopped down beside the bride. âRouâer, donât take it to heart. These people are just crude by nature. What I said earlier was only to humor them.â
Smelling the alcohol on the man beside her, Jiao Wanâer couldnât help but curse inwardly,
âWho would believe you? Others may not know your true nature, but donât I know it all too well?â
âRouâer, why arenât you speaking? Are you scared?â Song Qingshu asked softly.
Feeling his breath, Jiao Wanâer, who had been tense and stiff, relaxed slightly upon hearing his uncharacteristically gentle tone. Even though she knew the tenderness wasnât meant for her, she still found herself slightly lost in thought.
âIs this really the same violent and ruthless demonâŠ?â
âOh, I just remembered! We need to drink our nuptial wine!â Song Qingshu smacked his forehead, as if suddenly realizing. Though he had many women in this life, she was the only one he had ever formally married. Naturally, he was unfamiliar with the tedious rituals of this worldâs wedding customs.
There was also Zhou Zhiruo, but when he had married her, he hadnât yet arrived in this world.
Through the edge of her red veil, Jiao Wanâer could see Song Qingshu staggering toward the table. She clenched her fists tightly and bit her lip, praying silently,
âFall! Fall! Break your ne*ck, you ba*stard!â
Unfortunately, heaven did not seem to hear her prayers. Though Song Qingshu stumbled and wobbled, he still managed to return with two wine cups in hand.
Song Qingshu handed one of the cups to the bride, but she did not react at all.
âWhat, still angry at me?â Song Qingshu hiccupped and frowned.
âHmph, if only youâd storm out in a rage. Then Iâd be safe,â
Jiao Wanâer thought bitterly.
âOh, how could I forget? I need to lift the veil first!â Song Qingshu suddenly burst into laughter. âRouâer, donât take it the wrong way. Brother Song has little experience in these matters.â
âWith your methods, how could you have no experience in this? Youâre just lying through your teeth!â
Jiao Wanâer thought, recalling the night when he had subjected her to unheard-of torment. Her body, without her realizing, softened slightly at the memory.
However, when she sensed that Song Qingshu was about to lift her red veil, Jiao Wanâerâs heart leaped into her throat.
âItâs over. Once he sees the bride is me, who knows what heâll doâŠâ
âEh? Rouâer, why do you look different?â Looking at the beauty before him, who seemed to be both angry and shy, Song Qingshu rubbed his eyes in confusion.
His hand brushed against the brideâs face, and just as Jiao Wanâer was growing increasingly anxious, Song Qingshu let out a sigh. âRouâer, I must really be drunk, mistaking you for Lady Luo.â
Jiao Wanâer had never imagined the situation would unfold like this. Watching Song Qingshu, who seemed half-asleep, gazing at her like a fool, she couldnât help but stifle a laugh, despite her earlier fear.
âRouâer, you wonât blame me, will you?â Song Qingshu gently wrapped his arm around the brideâs waist and sighed. âItâs just that recently, I did something terribly wrong to her. Guilt has been plaguing me, and I often dream of her at night. I didnât expect that even in my drunken state, Iâd still have such hallucinations.â
When Song Qingshuâs hand touched her again, Jiao Wanâerâs body stiffened. But hearing his words, she froze in shock.
âImpossible. How could this demon feel guilt?â
Song Qingshu had haunted Jiao Wanâerâs dreams every night for days, waking her up in terror each time. Her fear of him had long since seeped into her very bones, so hearing his words now, she naturally didnât believe him.
But despite her disbelief, Jiao Wanâer mustered the courage to glance at Song Qingshuâs eyes. To her surprise, they were indeed filled with confusion and remorse. âCould it be that he really hasnât recognized me?â
âEh, Rouâer, have you been hit by a pressure point?â Even though Song Qingshu was drunk, his instincts as a skilled fighter remained. Holding Jiao Wanâer, he quickly noticed something wrong with her body.
âAh, it must have been that mischievous girl, Youyou. No wonder she was lingering by the door earlier,â Song Qingshu muttered as he quickly released Jiao Wanâerâs pressure point. âDonât be mad at her, Rouâer. Sheâs always been a jealous one. Seeing you marry me probably made her upset, so she played a little trick on you.â
As soon as Jiao Wanâer regained her mobility, she fiercely pushed Song Qingshu aside and jumped off the bed, rushing toward the door.
âYouyou? Qingshu? Hmph, if it wasnât her, who else could pull off such a prank?â
Hearing Song Qingshu refer to Xia Qingqing as a jealous woman, Jiao Wanâer couldnât help but nod in agreement.
âHey, Rouâer, where are you going?â Just as Jiao Wanâer reached the door, Song Qingshuâs groggy voice came from behind her.
Seeing that he wasnât getting up to chase her, Jiao Wanâer curiously glanced back, only to see Song Qingshu collapse weakly onto the bed, as if he had fallen asleep.
âWhat a golden opportunity!â
Jiao Wanâerâs heart raced. After a moment of hesitation, she pulled a dagger from her clothing and slowly approached the bed.
She had prepared this dagger after that fateful night, intending to use it for self-defense should Song Qingshu ever try to violate her again. Yet, for some reason, Song Qingshu had acted as if nothing had happened in the days since, never coming to her again. This left her both relieved and strangely disappointed.
Earlier, Xia Qingqing had acted impulsively, not thinking to search Jiao Wanâerâs body. After all, in Xia Qingqingâs mind, with Song Qingshuâs martial arts skills, how could Jiao Wanâer possibly hurt him, especially with her pressure points sealed?
By sheer coincidence, Jiao Wanâer had been handed a golden opportunity for revenge. A single stab could send that demon straight to hell.
Jiao Wanâer held the dagger over Song Qingshuâs chest, ready to strike. But just as she was about to plunge the blade in, her peripheral vision caught sight of Zeng Rou, who was huddled under the covers. Her heart wavered.
Zeng Rou had always been a close friend. If she killed him now, wouldnât Zeng Rou become a widow right after getting married? And with Song Qingshuâs current status, if he were to die in the bridal chamber, Rou would be the prime suspectâŠ
âIâve already ruined her wedding night; how can I drag her into this mess too?â
Looking at the defenseless man on the bed, Jiao Wanâerâs face flushed as she battled internally.
âFine, Iâll spare your wretched life for now. Iâll find another opportunity to take revenge.â
Jiao Wanâer shot Song Qingshu a hateful glare, but she reluctantly withdrew the dagger. Deep down, she knew that with his martial arts skills, seeking revenge openly was impossible. Finding such a perfect chance again would be no easy task.
