âWhat do you think?â Rael asked, pressing down on the gas pedal. âShe tried playing her games, so I played mine.â
âYou took away her skill,â the Beast stated coldly. âEvery single follower she had acquired in the last couple of millennia vanished in the blink of an eye.â
Rael scoffed. âOnce again, thatâs not my problem. She shouldâve expected something like this.â
âReally?â The Beast leaned in. âEven I didnât expect you to steal an Ancient-ranked skill, and yet here you are, sitting without even batting an eye at such a feat.â
âI appreciate the kind words, but Iâm more preoccupied thinking about how to deal with Beatrice. Iâm sure sheâll be enraged, so Iâll try to strike while the ironâs hot. She might fuck up, after all,â Rael added with a smile.
âWell, I suppose this makes the fight more fair,â the Beast remarked. âIâm giving control back to Seryn. I shall watch your fight from a different plane.â
Just as the Beast was about to leave, however, it offered some parting words.
âAlso, the people of the Scorched Lands are sneaking up on Bertha. You can either treat them as convenient allies or as potential enemies. It is all up to you.â
With that, the Beastâs eyes rolled back, replaced by the blue eyes of Seryn, who immediately fell asleep.
Nonetheless, Rael didnât pay much attention to it. Despite his heart beating violently, heâd already set his mind on going through with this.
Therefore, Rael looked at the road ahead, and the moment he did, he saw a beautiful stone arch, which he swiftly passed through.
He had stationed his constructs a few kilometers away from the last monument, and as for him, he had finally arrived at the second-to-last monument.
To his left was a pile of giant monster bones towering into the sky.
And yet again, the monsters were nowhere to be seen.
It was a pity, as he couldâve really used those extra stats. However, he couldnât do much about it, so he simply got out of the car and approached the bonfire.
The torch was conveniently placed right beside the bonfire, so he picked it up and tossed it inside before going through the normal procedure.
<Monument Detected: Gravefire Ritual â Inactive â Active>
<Total Monuments Lit: 9/10>
<Flame will remain until all Monuments are lit.>
<Received: 1 Ember>
One left⊠Rael sighed, devouring the fruit in an instant.
<Ember of Life Consumed!>
<+2,000 Constitution>
<+500 Intelligence>
<+500 Wisdom>
The effects noticeably decreased, but they were still better than nothing, so Rael simply put it aside in his mind and slowly began preparing himself.
It felt really strange knowing his life had a very real chance of ending soonâRael couldnât really believe it.
But with the little hope and money he had left, he wouldnât let that shit bother him.
Therefore, he got back into the car and slowly began driving up.
âWell, Sweepus, I wonder what kind of advice youâd give me if you could talk?â Rael said with a chuckle. âSeryn is knocked out, and youâve been with me all this time. Itâs just a pity you canât communicate.â
Just as he was about to stop talking to himself, Sweepus suddenly tapped his shoulder, causing him to turn.
Sweepus Prime began making strange gestures with its surprisingly mobile arms. HoweverâŠ
âMate, if youâve been with me for so long, you should know by now I donât understand sign language,â Rael said with a sigh.
A frown appeared on Sweepusâs face as it suddenly tapped on its own body. In the very next moment, a crystal scribble board appeared.
Sweepus began writing, and within a few minutes, it was done.
It turned the scribble board toward Rael, revealing a few plain words.
âFinal Boss is hard, but you can do it with usâŠ?â Rael read it out loud, his eyes widening. âYou really understood me all this time and havenât tried to say anything? I thought I was imagining itâŠâ
Sweepus nodded innocently and scribbled down a few more words.
âWe crystal summons can understand you perfectly, but you have not crafted vocal cords into our bodies⊠Oh, my bad,â Rael replied with a chuckle. âIâll get you fixed up once weâre back. I promise.â
And of course, he was met with a thumbs up and a smile from Sweepus.
However, it meant a lot more to Rael than Sweepus could ever know.
After all, a lighthearted chat like thatâeven if briefâwas extremely comforting.
Nonetheless, he sped up, passing by dozens of stalagmites that towered into the sky, and after just a few more moments, he finally saw something different.
There were half a dozen small blue crystal beings marching in a formation. However, once they noticed him, they all halted and saluted in unison.
Rael smiled and half-opened the window before sending them a wave.
âIâm sure all of you already know of the plan, but just in case, let me remind you.â
He cleared his throat and continued. âIâm going to get Beatriceâs ass, and in the meantime, I want all of you to storm the monument, activate it, and then bring me the Ember. There will be sacrifices, and I myself might even die. But do rememberâlight the bonfire, and get me the Ember no matter what.â
As he finished his little speech, every single one of the constructs present saluted in unison.
âGood. Move with me,â Rael commanded. âOnce the monument and the spider are in range, separate into several groups. Whatever happens, Iâm glad all of you are here to support me.â
With that, he kept going forward while staying in the car.
The REwinder had an option to turn back the carâs time by a few seconds, and while the usage was limited, he could avoid a few crucial hits.
And it was about time he woke Seryn up.
âOi!â Rael yelled, quickly hitting the brakes and sending Seryn flying into the back of the passenger seat.
âUghâŠâ A groan rang out, followed by Serynâs gloomy face appearing. âThat was one long dreamâŠâ
âYeah, yeah, you can knock yourself out later. Firstââ
Rael trailed off as he suddenly saw something far off in the distance.
It was a single slim black spider leg. However, it was the size of the tallest mountain he had seen in the entire Plague Lands.
In fact, it rivaled the Beastâs colossal size when he had first encountered it.
But as quickly as the leg appeared, it soon vanished.
However, that meant Beatrice was close, and she was going to attack ahead of schedule.
Therefore, he rolled the window down and gave a few simple commands.
âScatter! Keep going north, you canât miss the massive obelisk!â
Immediately, the constructs dashed off without even wasting a second.
Then, he turned to the puzzled Seryn and flashed a small yet shaky smirk.
âYouâve been asleep for a while⊠Iâll give you a quick rundown on whatâs about to happen.â
