The walk over to the Demon Kingâs palace was, well, rough. The number of demons there was just crazy, and for all of them to hate Lilith, it was even crazier.
Obviously, she might not have had a good track record because of her past. Notably, when she got exiled. But he thought that after so many years, the track record had faded and they saw her for who she was.
Not to mention, he had half expected the Demon Kingâs words to actually mean something. If he chose someone, didnât that mean that certain someone was powerful enough to warrant the Demon Kingâs respect?
Even if that someone was the Demon Kingâs child, what difference did it make? They were powerful, and that was all that damn mattered.
Still, despite him overthinking it a little, Lilith seemed relatively unfazed. After all, she didnât really consider most of these demons her own kin. The only demons she had grown up with and led were the Shadow Demons.
âHonestly, I wish these people would just piss off. Dealing with them is so annoying,â she said with a sigh. âAlso, my father seems to be injured. Could you see whatâs wrong with him?â
Considering they werenât even there yet, she was rather impatient. So of course, Rael went ahead and did a quick check, making sure that he was fine. Yet he wasnât. Much like Uriel, he had something going on with his body.
Except this time, the Demon Kingâs body was seriously injured. There was a large inner scar inside Williamâs chest, and from the looks of things, he didnât have long left to live.
This revelation made Rael a little confused. Just who could have done something like this? He quickly did some digging, trying to find just who it was, and soon enough, Rael realized that the one responsible was right beside him.
Lilith had somehow injured the Demon King to the point his life would end soon. It was impressive by all means.
âLooks like you two fought and you injured him a lot,â Rael said with a sigh. âHeâs not going to die since Iâm here, but keep playfighting a little less feral.â
Lilith recalled the fight, then sighed. âRight⊠We had one fight for the throne, and I won it after destroying his Demon Core. He shouldâve died, but I saved him. I didnât know he was still dying.â
âYou couldnât have settled it with rock paper scissors or something?â Rael asked.
She shrugged. âHad we done it that way, the entire Demon Realm wouldâve laughed at us.â
Laughed at them? Rael glanced around, seeing that there was already discord. Maybe laughing wouldâve been a bit better than whatever this was. Sure, there were a lot of demons, but killing millions for no reason didnât seem that nice.
Despite that, they eventually arrived at the palace, and William was already waiting for them on his throne. Seeing them approach, he rolled his eyes and said:
âI didnât expect you two to arrive. Whatâs the occasion?â
âApparently, we made it just in time before your funeral. How are you feeling, father-in-law?â Rael asked.
At Raelâs words, Williamâs brows twitched.
âYouâve gotten comfortable enough to call me father-in-law now?â
Rael chuckled. âYep. Iâm plenty strong now to not be scared of you. On that note, hereâs your daughter, who nearly killed you.â
Just like that, the attention fell over to Lilith, who merely stared at her father for a moment before saying:
âYou seem much weaker than the last time I saw you. Canât you regenerate?â
âTry regenerating a broken Demon Core,â he replied with a sigh.
âDonât you have plenty, though?â Lilith mused. âAs a Demon King, the number of Demon Cores you have should be in the hundreds at this point.â
âAnd you shattered my first ever one. As the first, it was essentially the template for all my future cores. Without it, my bodyâs malfunctioning,â William replied.
Hearing that from the side, Rael got an idea. If all that this guy needed was a reset, then Rael could do it. Yet right as he was about to, Lilith raised her hand, stopping him.
âDonât heal him. Demons donât like it when someone else meddles with their fate.â
Rael raised a brow. âWould you rather he die here? Because although you two mightâve duked it out as you shouldâve, heâs still your father. Not to mention, a lot of the demons are unhappy with the result anyway. Do you seriously think that having the Demon King die a death befitting the rules would really change their opinion?â
âBoy, no one really cares about their opinions. Not even the demons themselves care about their own opinions. The only thing theyâre good at is speaking nonsense. They like to die too, because as demons, we see death as an escape. We escape into a realm of nothingness, then are reborn,â William said, putting a hand on his chin.
âAnd no, this isnât a fairytale. When a demon reaches Grade 5, they are able to see their past life. Frankly, I was a farmer in my past life, but I lied to everyone and said I was a ruler. Who would know? Those who claimed to be from that era, I would kill. Simple as that.â
Rael chuckled. âSo bullshitting your way into power, huh. Thatâs neat.â
Lilith pinched Raelâs side. âIt is bullshitting, but he had the strength to back it up.â
Didnât he still have it? Why insist on him dying? Rael couldnât understand it, but then again, it was both of their wishes to let this play out however it would.
âIâm not intent on dying,â William said out of nowhere. âIf I die from just this, then it wasnât meant to be. However, if I survive, Iâll become infinitely stronger. Itâs a risk Iâm willing to take.â
Ah.
So in the end, it was all about power. How sad⊠He was already one of the most powerful, but still wanted to be a little more powerful.
Welp.
Rael decided not to intervene in that case.
