Chapter 494: Dangers on the Horizon ( 494 )
âLittle brother,â Cedric called casually.
Javier turned slightly, raising an eyebrow.
âBefore you get too excitedâŠâ Cedric adjusted his armor strap, smirking. âFather said you should stop by the Armand border town first.â
He tilted his head, eyes gleaming.
âAnother mission is waiting for you.â
âHuh?â Javier blinked in surprise.
Cedric shrugged lazily.
âDonât ask. Just do it. Fatherâs orders.â
Javier grimaced.
âUgh⊠fine.â He turned toward Buddy.
âBuddy!!â
Cuquawk!! Buddy flapped his wings excitedly, stomping the ground.
Javier swung onto Buddyâs back smoothly, settling into his saddle with ease. He cast a glance back at Mimi and Delya, who were still nibbling on their breakfast.
âMimi, Delya. Follow Cedric. Help clear away the miasma with them.â
Mimiâs ears twitched.
Delya pouted, crossing her arms stubbornly.
âNo way!! Weâre following you!!â they said in unison.
âNo⊠noâŠâ Javier shook his head firmly. âYou both shouldnât come. This is a high-risk, dangerous mission. Not something for you to follow.â
But Mimi crossed her arms with a stubborn pout.
Delya smiled sweetly.
âNo way! We insist on going with you!â Mimi shouted.
Suddenly, she leapt onto Javierâwho was already mountedâclinging to his waist like a cat.
âNyaa!!â she meowed softly.
âOiâ!! Get off!!â Javier shouted, struggling to stay balanced.
Before he could shake her off, Delya gracefully jumped up and latched onto his side, teasingly.
âIâm not letting you go alone, danna-sama~â
Buddy staggered back a step, flapping his wings nervously from the extra weight.
Cedric leaned against a tree, arms crossed, laughing heartily.
Javier shot him a glare.
Meanwhile, Mimi and Delya only tightened their grip, refusing to loosen.
âUgh⊠fineâŠâ Javier sighed in defeat, feeling utterly overwhelmed.
He muttered under his breath.
âDonât regret this laterâŠâ
As Buddy shuffled and adjusted to balance the three of them, Javier grumbled.
âWhat about your mounts?!â he snapped at Mimi and Delya.
Delya just smiled breezily and waved her hand.
âHmm? I can just unsummon mine.â
With a flick of her wrist, her Dark War Wolf shimmered with faint light and vanishedâreturned to her summoning realm.
Mimi patted her mount gently.
âGo back to father, nya~,â she said sweetly.
Her tiger beast let out a soft growl, then obediently turned around and trotted back into the forest, disappearing.
Javier stared at both of them, deadpan.
âYou two really planned this, didnât you?â he muttered.
Delya grinned, hugging him tighter.
Mimi purred happily.
âBrother Cedric,â Javier called out.
âHmm?â Cedric turned, still adjusting his gauntlet straps.
âBe careful,â Javier said seriously. âThe dark monsters here⊠the miasma⊠itâs different.â
Cedric chuckled lightly and waved it off.
âYeah, I know. Donât worry too much.â He glanced back at his squadâheavily armored paladins, robed mages, and a handful of Armand priestsâready and waiting.
âIâve got Marcellusâs mage unit, those priests, and a good team. Weâre more than prepared.â
Javierâs eyes swept over the group, recognizing a few familiar facesâespecially the high priest of Armand, the one who blessed the estate back home.
Relief washed over him.
âBrother.â
âHmm?â Cedric looked over.
âMake sure you wear the bracelet I gave you.â Javierâs voice lowered.
Cedric grinned and tapped his wrist, revealing the faint glow of the enchanted bracelet.
âI know. Marcellus is wearing his too.â
Javier nodded slowly, trusting theyâd be okay.
Just as he was about to turn, Cedric grinned mischievously.
âOhâby the way, before you goââ
âHmm?â Javier paused.
Cedric chuckled.
âYour maid is getting married soon.â
Javier froze, eyes wide.
âLiana!?â His heart nearly leapt out of his chest.
Cedric burst into laughter.
âNo, stupid! Lithia!â
Javier let out a huge sigh, slumping halfway in his saddle.
âOh⊠well, sheâs not technically my personal maid.â
Cedric nodded, still smirking.
âYeah, but she did take care of you when you were a baby.â
Javier shrugged.
âWell⊠for a few months. As long as itâs not Liana or Gloria, I donât care.â
âAlright, everyone!â Javier called out loudly, his voice clear across the clearing.
All the soldiers and priests who had followed Cedric straightened instantly.
Javier pointed firmly at Cedric.
âThis is my command! Protect my brother.â
Without hesitation, the entire group responded in unison:
âYes! Young Master!â
Cedricâs face twisted slightly, a mixture of annoyed amusement.
He marched toward Javier, half-glowering.
âOi, little brother!â Cedric huffed, âTheyâre my men!â
Javier shrugged casually, a mischievous grin curling on his face.
Buddy flapped his wings behind him, almost as if laughing along.
Cedric let out a dramatic sigh.
âFine. Fine.â he grumbled, but the warmth behind his words was unmistakableâfamiliar brothers, after countless pranks and battles.
His smile suddenly faded, replaced by rare seriousness.
He stepped closer, voice steady and level.
âJavier De Armand.â
Javier straightened slightly, feeling the weight behind Cedricâs tone.
âBe careful on your mission.â Cedric said quietly.
He crossed his arms, fixing him with a direct look.
âI might not know what exactly youâre going to doâŠ
The letter was sealedâitâs just for you. We couldnât open it even if we wanted to.â
He paused, voice lowering.
âBut knowing youâand where youâre headedâitâs going to be the most dangerous one yet.â
He looked him straight in the eyes.
âDonât die.â
Javier gave a small, crooked smile.
âI wonât.â
He pulled gently on Buddyâs reins.
âBut⊠I canât promise Iâll come back alive either.â
Cedric chuckled dryly, shaking his head.
âYeah, yeah⊠stubborn as always.â
He lifted a hand, as if to give a final gesture of encouragement.
âAnd little brother?â
Javier looked at him, one eyebrow raised.
âYes?â
Cedric gave a small, firm smile.
âGood luck.â
Javier smirked, lowering his head slightly in a silent nod.
âYou too, Brother Cedric.â
With that, he gently tapped Buddyâs side and prepared to leave.
âAlright, Buddy! Everyone! Iâm going!â Javier called out with a grin.
Buddy crouched low, muscles tensing.
âDash!!!â Javier commanded.
Cuquawked!! Buddy let out a loud, excited cryâand then launched forward at full speed.
The sudden burst of speed kicked up dust and leaves behind him.
The Pekko units from Cedricâs team squawked loudly in excitement, some hopping and flapping their wings wildly.
Cuquawked!! Cuquawked!!
The whole clearing buzzed with energy for a moment as Buddy dashed through the forest trail like a bolt of orange and gold, carrying Javier, Mimi, and Delya toward the distant Armand border.
