That day, Yang Yushi walked on her own for about two hours, but spent most of the time on Song Xiaodong’s back.

She realized she wasn’t much of a burden to Song Xiaodong, allowing them to move much faster. Most importantly, she loved being carried on Song Xiaodong’s back.

Song Xiaodong only took brief naps, then traveled continuously day and night. On the third day, they crossed the border into another African country.

There they were temporarily placed in a refugee camp, waiting for the embassy to arrange their evacuation.

The Chinese embassy acted swiftly, sending someone the next day to bring them to the local embassy.
