When Rey rushed out of the bathroomâstill flustered by Aidenâs earlier threat of electrocutionâhe found Evan and James waiting for him in the hallway.
âHey guys, Iâm back. Sorry for the delay,â Rey said, scratching his cheek with an apologetic smile.
âNo worries, Rey,â Evan replied. âWe just got here five minutes ago. But are
you
okay? James said you werenât feeling well. Should we take you to the infirmary for a quick check-up?â
Rey waved his hand quickly. âNah, it was just a minor stomach acheâitâs already gone. Nothing to worry about.â
He paused for a beat, then quickly shifted the subject.
âAnyway, forget about me. Evan, what about
you
? You fainted earlier. That wasnât normal. Is there something going on that youâre not telling us?â
The concern in his voice was genuine, but the subtle change in topic was intentional. Judging by the expressions on their faces, it worked.
Evan shook his head. âNo, really. It was just sleep deprivation. Didnât I already tell you about the dream issue Iâve been having?â
His eyes flicked toward James, who stood silent and unmovingâstaring at Evan with narrowed eyes.
Rey noticed the strange tension and tilted his head. ââŠJames? Why are you staring like that?â
James took a step forward.
âDonât you think Evanâs acting a little⊠suspicious?â
âHuh?â Rey blinked. âDude, thatâs Evan. Our Evan.â
He placed a hand on Jamesâs shoulder, trying to ease him back. James had a reputation for being aggressive when provokedâand even though he tried to control his temper, it often exploded like a downhill landslide.
âWhat are you talking about, man?â Evan said, backing up a little. âItâs me! Your one and only Evan! Rey, help me out here or James is gonna send me to the hospital for real!â
âJames,â Rey said, frowning. âYou said youâd pull a light prank to scare Evanânot
this
. Youâre taking it too far.â
âIâm
not
joking!â James barked. âYou saw how he changed after that fainting incident! Donât you think his personalityâs different now? Like⊠someone possessed him. Like in those manhwa or novels, right?â
âWHAT?â Evan threw his hands up. âYou think someone
possessed
me? What, like I got reincarnated or transmigrated into my own body after death?â
âThatâs
exactly
what Iâm saying!â James snapped. âRemember his dream? He said he felt like a different person, had some sword or magic thing going onâwhat if it was a memory from whoever took over his body?â
James crossed his arms. âIf youâre really Evan⊠then prove it. Tell me something only the three of us would know.â
Evan let out a long sigh. âAlright, listen carefullyâŠâ
âWhen we went to karaoke two months ago,
you
, in your party craze, drank that bottle of alcohol you mistook for soda. You got totally wasted, trashed the room, and vomited all over the place. The owner let us go only because he knew who you were. You
begged
to crash at my house so your parents wouldnât find out, but they did anyway. You got grounded for a week, and they made you swear not to even
look
at alcohol until you turn twentyâafter realizing it was the storeâs fault.â
Evan exhaled and looked at James.
âCorrect?â he asked.
ââŠYeah. Thatâs⊠accurate,â James admitted, voice cracking. âBut even then⊠in the novels I read, the guy who reincarnates
also
gets the originalâs memories.â
Rey sighed. âBro, he just gave us a memory you
didnât
even want to remember. Can you chill already?â
âYou can chill,â James muttered. âBut
I
wonât.â
He suddenly charged toward Evan.
Evan flinched and closed his eyes, mentally preparing himself for a fist to the face. He knew he couldnât take a punch from Jamesâheâd get mangled like a squashed mango.
ButâŠ
The pain never came.
Instead, a firm grip landed on his shoulder.
And thenâ
âHAHAHAHAHA!â
James burst into laughter. âLook at that, Rey! Our little Evan actually braced himself to get punched for me! You always called him a coward!â
Rey blinked, then facepalmed. âWaitâŠ
that
was the prank? Dude, you almost gave me a heart attack.â
Evan stepped back, groaning. âYou were both
pranking me
?! Why?â
James grinned. âWe wanted to help with your dream problem. The plan came together in the bathroom when I went to find Rey.â
âThat was
help
? I nearly passed out again!â Evan protested, and weakly punched Jamesâs chest. It was like a feather tickling a wall.
âBut it worked, didnât it?â James chuckled. âAnd besides, I was totally in control.â
Evan grumbled, though a smile tugged at the corners of his lips.
âAnyway,â James clapped his hands, âweâre gonna be late for class if we donât hurry.â
âOh crap!â Rey jumped. âLetâs go! We canât get punished
again
! Sir wonât be lenient this time!â
As they took off toward the stairs, Evan trailed behind with a slower pace, his mind buzzing with thoughts.
âDamn⊠James actually noticed the changes in my behavior after that incident. A single glance, and he sensed something was off⊠If this wasnât a prank, things mightâve gone very differently. But now that itâs over⊠time to focus on the plan.â
âTo get myself kidnapped⊠and end this once and for all.â
âHey Evan! What are you dragging your feet for? Hurry up!â James shouted from the stairs.
Evan smiled faintly, then picked up the pace.
