Chapter 144: Chapter 144: Do You Dare to Swear?
"Of course I have! My whole family can testify!" Wesley Kaneās eyes were fixed on her. "You have a red mole right in the center of your back. If we hadnāt been so intimate, how would I know that?"
Vera Xavier smiled. "Cara Preston told you, didnāt she?"
"Why would I need her to tell me? Vera, just admit it. Youāve already slept with me, and Iāve seen every inch of your body!" Wesleyās smile grew even more lecherous.
Mocking jeers rose from the crowd once again.
But Vera simply ignored them. She wasnāt angry, nor was she the least bit shy. She only said, "Alright, then. Swear to the heavens. If a single word of what you just said is a lie, may you be struck by lightning!"
Wesley Kane froze. People in this day and age were relatively superstitious, and he didnāt quite dare to make such a vicious vow. Daisy Archer immediately cut in, "Vera, whatās done is done. I sincerely think of you as my daughter-in-law. Stop being so stubborn and come home with me. There are too many people here. Even if you donāt find this shameful, I do!"
Vera paid her no mind, her gaze still fixed on Wesley Kaneās eyes. "Didnāt you just keep insisting it was the truth? Then why donāt you dare to swear?"
Wesley blustered, "Itās not that I donāt dare to swear, thereās just no need!"
"Itās not that thereās no need, itās that youāre lying!" Vera raised her voice. "Youāre the one lying to harm me, trying to ruin my reputation! Cara Preston is the one who told you about the mole on my back, and I wasnāt staying at your house at all during the days I was away from home!"
"If you werenāt at my house, then where were you?" Wesley Kane sneered.
Vera pressed her lips together tightly. Wesley, however, thought she was scared. His eyes filled with glee; heād already done his homework. Vera had only recently moved to the city from the countryside and had no relatives or friends here.
Wesley was about to taunt her some more. āTheyāve already destroyed her reputation today anyway. Sheāll never be able to marry anyone else. For the rest of her life, her only choice is to marry me. And after weāre married... Iāll make her life a living hell!ā
Just as he was fantasizing about how to destroy Vera, an aged voice spoke up: "She was staying in the hospital!"
Wesley Kane froze when he heard the voice and was about to start cursing instinctively. But when he saw Master Nathanās icy face, his legs trembled in fear, and he almost dropped to his knees.
Vera walked up to him. "Mr. Nathan, what are you doing here?"
The moment Cara Preston saw Master Nathan arrive, she inwardly cursed. āThis is bad.ā She had seen for herself how protective he was of Vera.
She glanced over at Daisy Archer and Wesley Kane. Both of their faces were ashen.
"You were away from home for two days to save my life, only to be slandered like this. If I didnāt show up, this scum would have eaten you alive!" Master Nathan said, his face flush with anger.

Master Nathan was one of the most prominent figures in all of Crestfall. Back in his day, a single stomp of his foot could make the city tremble. Even if the young students present didnāt recognize him, the schoolās security guards, Shane Caldwell, and the Kane mother-son duo certainly did.
Just then, Principal Gage, having received the news, hurried over from the academic building. "Nathan, what brings you here?"
Master Nathan, however, paid her no mind. Instead, he turned to Vera and said, "You silly girl. Things have already gotten to this point, so why havenāt you told them the truth?"
