Chapter 143: Chapter 143: Appearances Can Be Deceiving
Cara Prestonâs expression flickered, but Vera Xavierâs eyes held a bone-chilling coldness. "A moment ago, you fell into a ditch. No one paid you any mind. I was the only one who wanted to save you. I donât know what Mom and Dad taught you, but if repaying kindness with malice is what you call âintegrityâ and âgood character,â then Iâd rather have none of it!"
Many people had seen what just happened. Vera Xavier had indeed tried to save Cara Preston, but she had been held back by Daisy Archer and Wesley Kane. This made them start to doubt Cara Prestonâs character.
"No, thatâs not it!" Cara Preston said hurriedly. "Thatâs not what I meant. I just donât want you to go astray."
Vera Xavierâs expression was frosty. "So, according to you, I should thank you for calling me despicable?"
Cara Preston said plaintively, "Iâm not the one calling you despicable; youâre the one who actually did those things. Iâm just following our familyâs teachings to tell the truth. Vera, Iâm sorry. Iâve caused you trouble. I shouldnât have said it in front of so many people."
Vera Xavier was thoroughly disgusted. âThis girl isnât some innocent white lotus, sheâs a venomous black one!â
She asked coldly, "Telling the truth? All right, then. Cara Preston, why donât you go ahead and tell everyone exactly what despicable things Iâve supposedly done! Donât feel embarrassed, and donât bother saying itâs âfor my own good.â Just tell it like it is!"
Cara Preston was genuinely surprised. She really hadnât expected Vera Xavier to have the nerve to say that under these circumstances. She sneered inwardly. âFine. If Vera is digging her own grave, then Iâll be happy to oblige!â
So, Cara Preston said with a pitiful look, "Vera, youâre the one who asked me to say this. You canât blame me for what comes next."
Vera Xavier sneered. "Go on! I wonât blame you."
Cara Preston immediately said, "On the weekend of the monthly exams, you fought with Mom and ran out. You were gone for several nights and didnât come home. You said you went to the Xavier Familyâs place in the countryside, but Mom happened to go there on business yesterday. She asked around, and you werenât there at all those few days!"
"She was at my house!" Wesley Kane immediately interjected. This was all part of their plan; after considering their options, they had decided this was the perfect time to slander Vera Xavier.
His words immediately captured everyoneâs attention. A young woman staying at a manâs houseâespecially the man she had once been engaged to and marriedâthe implications were clear, and the crowd instantly erupted into a fresh wave of gossip.
"Oh my God! How shameless! She actually stayed at his house!"
"Thatâs unbelievable. And just a moment ago, she was acting so high and mighty!"
"You really canât judge a book by its cover. To think someone who looks so innocent would do something so shameless!"
Shane Caldwell had also heard about the incident from that weekend, which made him the most stunned of all. He stared at Vera Xavier in disbelief. "Did you really...?"
Vera Xavier ignored him, walking right up to Wesley Kane. "Do you dare swear to God that what youâre saying is the truth?"
"Why wouldnât I dare?" A lewd smile curled Wesley Kaneâs lips. "You didnât just stay at my house those few days. We ate together, lived together, slept together, and even bathed together. We did the most intimate things a couple can do."
"Do you have any proof?" Vera Xavier asked.
When Cara Preston heard this, a cold glint flashed in her eyes. âProof? I gave Wesley Kane the "proof" he needed long ago!â
