Chapter 349: Chapter 349: "I Am His Wife.
After Renee spoke, the four little cats fell silent again.
"Think it over carefully," Blueberry said earnestly. "What kind of companionship do you prefer? That of your friends, or that of an owner..."
The four little cats had kept each other company for a very, very long time back when they were strays.
The little tabby cat was young and spoke directly. He meowed, "I want an owner... Iâve never had an owner!"
Heâd already experienced having companions. Now, he wanted to experience having an owner.
Of course, that didnât mean he had any intention of abandoning his friends.
The other three cats were a bit older. While they were strays, they had countless times seen other cats held in their ownersâ arms, treasured like precious jewels.
Every time, they would be deeply envious. âIf only we could have an owner that wonderful one day...â Now, the opportunity was right in front of them.
The orange cat nodded its fluffy head. "In that case... letâs hope we meet again someday!"
The big tabby cat looked at the calico cat. "What about you?"
"Okay," the calico cat nodded. "Then itâs decided."
Once the four cats reached an agreement, Renee Jennings let them interact with the prospective adopters.
The little tabby, the big tabby, and the orange cat all chose owners they liked. Only the calico cat came away empty-pawed.
The little tabby cat was adopted by Peanut, the big tabby cat was adopted by Phyllis, and the orange cat was adopted by Coke Alien.
GoldRush wanted to adopt the calico cat, Blossom, but Blossom didnât choose her.
She seemed listless, as if nothing could pique her interest.
Back at Eastgate Villa, Blossom walked over to her companionsâ cat beds. As if seeing flashes of all the moments they had spent together, her amber eyes gradually grew moist.
"Blossom, whatâs wrong?" Cici sidled up to her. "Youâre crying."
Blossom turned her head away, refusing to admit it. "Iâm not crying. I just got some dust in my eye."
"Is it bad?" Cici asked with concern. "Should I get Renee to take a look?"
"No, itâs fine." Blossom shook her head. "Iâll be okay after a nap."
Cici watched her walk into the orange catâs bed. She tilted her head, wondering if she should remind her.
"What are you staring at?" Pudding asked, stopping as he passed by.
Cici told him what happened. "Iâm a little worried about Blossom."
Puddingâs brow furrowed. "Come on, letâs go ask Blueberry. Heâs sure to know whatâs going on."
"Okay."
Blueberry was in the garden, playing with a butterfly.
"Blueberry!" Puddingâs booming voice carried over. "We need to ask you something!"
Blueberry turned his head to see Pudding and Cici racing toward him. "What could you two possibly want?"
"Cici just saw Blossom..." Pudding explained the situation, then asked, "Didnât you all go to the park together to find adopters?"
"We did." A serious expression appeared on Blueberryâs fluffy face. "Blossom must be sad to part with her friends."
"Sigh." Pudding let out a breath. "It canât be helped. Every cat makes their own choice."
"True," Blueberry said. "What about you? Want to find an owner to pamper you like their precious treasure?"
"Forget it." Pudding rolled his eyes in disgust. "I think things are great just the way they are. Iâm free, itâs always lively, and I donât have to worry about food or drink."
Blueberry said, "My thoughts exactly."
For once, the two cats were in complete agreement.
**
The next morning, Renee Jennings received a direct message from Miles.
He said he had gone to see Nana over the weekend and was planning to see her parents on Monday.
On Saturday, Miles drove for three hours and arrived at the dormitory provided by Nanaâs company.
Nana wasnât there, but he ran into one of her colleagues who was working overtime.
When the colleague heard he was looking for Hannah Lowe, they asked who he was.
Miles lied and said he was Nanaâs older brother, even showing a photo of them together as proof.
Only then did the colleague give him Nanaâs address.
Miles added a word of caution, "Nana doesnât know Iâm here. I want it to be a surprise, so please keep this between us."
The colleague agreed.
Using the address the colleague provided, Miles found where Nana was living.
He waited downstairs for two hours before finally seeing Nana and Connor come down, holding hands.
This was the first time Miles had ever seen Connor. It was also the first time he had ever seen such a happy smile on his wifeâs face.
Whenever he and Nana went out, she always refused to hold hands or let him put an arm around her waist, saying such displays in public were too sappy and improper.
But now?
Connorâs hand, which was wrapped around her waist, slid down and gave her a little squeeze.
Nana turned her head and shot him a playful, scolding smile.
âWhat an unfamiliar wife,â Miles thought as he recorded the scene on his phone.
Like a stalker, he recorded the intimate, happy moments between his wife and another man.
Miles was surprised at how calm he could be.
The next day, after putting on a slight disguise, he knocked on the door of Nana and Connorâs home.
Nana opened the door. She was wearing an apron, her long, curly hair falling over her chest. She looked at him, puzzled. "Who are you looking for?"
"Is Mr. Kent here?" Miles asked, lowering his voice.
"Heâs not. Can I help you with something?"
"Thereâs a document that requires his signature."
"I can sign for it."
"And what is your relationship to Mr. Kent?"
Nana said, "Iâm his wife."
"You are Mr. Kentâs wife," Miles repeated calmly.
"Thatâs right. Is there a problem with me signing?"
"Not at all." Miles handed her the pen.
Nana signed her name, took the document, and shut the door.
Miles stared blankly at the closed door, a derisive smirk forming on his lips beneath the mask.
He turned and walked downstairs, happening to brush past Connor on his way back in.
"Honey, Iâm home!" Connor called out as he opened the door.
Miles heard his voice but didnât break stride, continuing quickly down the stairs.
"Youâre back," Nana said with a smile. "A document came for you. I left it on the shoe cabinet."
"A document for me?" Connor looked puzzled, muttering as he opened it, "Why would anyone be sending me documents?"
Inside the envelope were just two thin sheets of paper. The two words "Divorce Agreement" seared themselves into his vision.
Connor froze for a few seconds. Once he saw it clearly, he called out, "Nana, Miles sent you a divorce agreement."
CLANGâ
The spatula fell from Nanaâs hand, clattering to the floor.
She walked out of the kitchen and asked in disbelief, "What do you mean? Why would Miles send me a divorce agreement and have you sign for it?"
"I donât know," Connor said, shaking his head in a daze. "This is what was inside when I opened it."
The color drained from Nanaâs face. "This is bad," she said in a panic. "How would Miles know weâre here?"
"Youâre right." Connor frowned. "Do you think he already knows about us?"
Just as Nana was wondering, the screen of her phone, sitting on the coffee table, suddenly lit up.
She picked up her phone and saw a message from Milesâ
Hannah Lowe, be at your parentsâ house tomorrow at 2 p.m. I wonât wait.
Nana trembled all over. Her legs suddenly gave out, and she collapsed to the floor.
Her gut told her that Miles had definitely found out about her and Connor.
