Why were they calling each other so affectionately? To answer that, we need to rewind a few months.
After their first meeting in Sky City, Muse and Hefei had become pen pals.
The two little dragon girls communicated regularly via dragon messengers.
At first, they kept it a secret from their parents. That is, until one day, Konstantin noticed his daughter stashing an assortment of fancy envelopes and stationery.
Suspicious, he asked her if sheâd been writing to someone.
Knowing her pen palâs father was her own fatherâs rival, Hefei didnât immediately tell the truth. She claimed sheâd met a new friend from a neighboring clan.
But Konstantin wasnât so easily fooledâthere were no Silver Dragons bold enough to live next to a Red Flame Dragon, much less befriend them.
Eventually, Hefeiâs lie was uncovered. When Konstantin confronted her directly, she admitted sheâd been corresponding with Muse, Leonâs daughter, for quite some time.
Surprised, Konstantin asked to see the letters.
Though reluctant, Hefei knew she couldnât refuse and handed over her collection of letters.
The contents were simple: mundane topics like what theyâd had for breakfast, new magic spells theyâd learned, or little doodles theyâd drawn.
After reading a few lines, Konstantin unexpectedly smiledâa rare sight.
Hefei, curious, asked why he was smiling.
Konstantin explained seriously,
âYour vocabulary is clearly broader than Leonâs daughterâs, and your doodles are much better. This proves weâve already surpassed their family, even at the starting line.â
Hefei didnât understand his reasoning, but she was deeply impressed by his confidence.
Now, several months later, the two little pen pals were reunited in Sky City, overjoyed to see each other again.
Leon didnât mind his youngest daughter being friends with Konstantinâs cherished little one. In fact, he thought it was a good thing.
When Muse and Hefei stood side by side, their complementary appearancesâMuseâs black hair and red eyes contrasting with Hefeiâs red hair and black eyesâcreated a harmonious balance.
âSo, did you come to Sky City just for your daughter?â Leon asked, eyeing Konstantin.
Konstantinâs face remained stern, his serious demeanor causing Hefei to instinctively retreat behind him.
âNo, Iâm here on business and just brought her along,â Konstantin replied.
Having known Konstantin for years, Leon could easily tell when the Red Flame Dragon King was bluffing.
Lesson time with Professor Leon!
(pay attention, class):
To determine if a Dragon King is bluffing, pay close attention to their facial expressions and eyes.
The more serious their expression and the more resolute their gaze, the greater the likelihood theyâre just posturing!
Smirking, Leon exposed him without hesitation.
âYou came here just for your daughter, didnât you? Why not admit it?â
Konstantin frowned, maintaining his stance.
âI told youâIâm here on business, and I brought her along.â
âReally?â Leon tilted his head. âI donât believe you.â
âBelieve what you want,â Konstantin retorted.
Before their banter could continue, Hefei tugged on Konstantinâs sleeve and asked sweetly,
âDaddy, can Muse and I go shopping together?â
The little dragon girl then turned her bright eyes toward her father, waiting for his approval.
Konstantin softened instantly, patting his daughterâs head. âMm.â
Leon couldnât help but chuckle. It was a universal truth: daughters could wrap their fathers around their little fingers from the moment they were born.
âGood thing Iâve had four daughters,â Leon thought. He was well-versed in the art of giving in to their whims.
With her fatherâs approval, Hefei smiled brightly and joined Muse as they walked off hand-in-hand.
Leon watched their retreating figures thoughtfully before turning to Konstantin.
âYou really care about Hefei, donât you?â
Konstantin crossed his arms, his usual stoic expression unchanged.
âWe dragons raise our young this way.â
The conversation reminded Leon of something Rosvisser had once told him.
Years ago, when Leon questioned some of her parenting choices, sheâd replied with the same words:
âWe dragons raise our young this way.â
At the time, Leon had countered with,
âBut theyâre not entirely dragons.â
That statement had struck a chord with Rosvisser, leading her to adopt a few human child-rearing practices.
âYou dragons can be so rigid sometimes. Raising children shouldnât be this strict,â Leon remarked casually to Konstantin.
Konstantin crossed his arms again, though he didnât entirely dismiss Leonâs comment. If anyone else had said it, Konstantin wouldnât have listened. But Leon wasnât just anyone.
Besides, Konstantin had always been curious about how Leon raised his daughtersâespecially Muse and her artistic inclinations.
âSo, how should we raise them? Like you and Rosvisser do?â Konstantin asked, half-joking.
âOf course! Look how well-adjusted my girls are,â Leon said proudly, puffing out his chest.
Konstantin raised an eyebrow.
âTheyâre not entirely dragons.â
Leon and Rosvisser: âŠ
Leon sighed, realizing heâd been hit with his own logic. Years ago, heâd fired that argument like a bullet, only for it to come back now and strike him squarely in the knee.
âIn that case,â Konstantin continued, âHefei is a pureblood dragon. She should be raised with traditional dragon methods.â
Konstantin wasnât arguing for the sake of itâhe genuinely wanted Leonâs perspective, given the differences between raising mixed-blood and pureblood children.
Leon furrowed his brow, considering the matter carefully.
âI donât think raising children should depend so heavily on bloodlines,â he finally said.
âWhat do you mean?â
Leon explained,
âEvery life comes into this world like an uncut gemâpure and full of potential.
Pureblood or mixed-blood, it doesnât matter.
What shapes them into who theyâll become is the influence of us, their parents.â
âIf Hefei wants to grow up to be a proud Red Flame Dragon King like you, then by all means, raise her your way.
But what if she has her own dreams?â
Konstantin hesitated, then admitted,
âNo, I havenât asked her about her future.â
âThen maybe you should,â Leon suggested. Watching Muse and Hefei from afar, he added,
âChildren are full of limitless possibilities. We should let them choose their own paths and offer guidance when they need it. That way, when they look back on their childhood, they wonât feel regret or resentment about the choices they madeâor the ones we made for them.â
