Chapter 159: 034: Chaos and Order
As Lynch gradually interacted more with Wizard Somda, he came to learn more about his mentor.
He was a very focused person.
Once he got into something, he would immerse himself completely as if he couldnât stop, going without rest or sleep.
Ever since entering this particular space, Lynch had spent most of his time watching him at that enormous clock. Either drafting blueprints and calculating formulas near the clock or hammering away with various tools and parts on the clock face itself.
Whether Lynch was meditating, studying, or simply passing by, he would always see Somda there, as though he never took a momentâs pause.
Lynch couldnât help but quip, âMentor, donât you need to rest? Your dedication is a bit too much!â
Little did Lynch expect Somda to counter, âShouldnât I be asking you this question instead?â
Somda looked at Lynch with an expression of utter disbelief and said, âWhen I started drawing the blueprints, I saw you meditating over there. By the time I finished drafting and began calculating formulas, you were *still* meditating there. Hey, kid, are you sure *you* donât need rest?â
Lynch shrugged and replied, âIâm used to it.â
âHahaha!â
Somda burst into laughter. âWell, it looks like Iâm used to it too.â
In some ways, their temperaments in this regard were quite similar. Lynch was utterly absorbed in meditation and learning, while Somda was entirely preoccupied with his alchemy device. Each had their own path and remained unwavering in their devotion.
Of course, Somda wasnât always so rigid. Occasionally, he would chat with Lynch about things unrelated to magic.
Especially gossip.
âHey, do you have a girlfriend?â he asked casually one day while eating.
After thinking for a moment, Lynch replied, âSort of.â
âTell me her name. Iâll divine for you two, see if youâre compatible or not,â Somda said.
Lynch twitched the corner of his mouth, â⊠âŠâ
Under the magic system, there was indeed a branch dedicated to destiny divination, categorized under the spiritual system. But using divination for *this*? Well, Lynch was hearing about it for the first time.
He responded, âAvery Karina Tavendish.â
âTavendish?â
Somdaâs face revealed surprise. He scrutinized Lynch up and down. âI didnât expect you, this little Muggle, to have some skill after all⊠Alright, now think about that girlâs image in your head. Iâll take a look at what she looks like.â
Though puzzled, Lynch still went ahead, recalling moments he had spent with Avery.
Somda raised his hand and gently swiped through the air. Dots of starlight suddenly emerged from his body, silently gathering in the air to form Averyâs portrait.
Lynch was stunned: What kind of magic is this?
Somda stared at Averyâs image and nodded repeatedly. âNot bad, not bad. Kid, youâve got good taste.â
After a pause, he asked, âSlept together yet?â
Lynch was speechless, âThatâs a private matter, isnât it?â
Somda replied matter-of-factly, âAs your mentor, itâs my responsibility to care about everything concerning my apprentices.â
Lynch rolled his eyes: Youâre just trying to listen to gossip, donât give me that nonsenseâŠ
He shook his head. âNo.â
Somda gave a peculiar look. âNot yet? Whatâs the deal? Is this Tavendish girl just playing with you, or are you so insecure as a Muggle that youâre too timid to act?â
Somda adopted a somewhat arrogant tone as he admonished, âMy students must never be cowards! Forget this little patch of ruinsâlook at the entire Third Wizard World. You wonât find many who deserve to make you bow your head!â
Lynch found the old man truly odd. On one hand, he was just an ordinary wizard. On the other, his inventions were indeed astounding, and his arrogance seemed limitlessâŠ
Could he actually be some sort of hidden figure?
Lynch shook his head again. âNo.â
After a pause, he explained, âWe donât stay in touch often; both of us are busy. The last time I saw her was ten years ago.â
Somdaâs lips twitched. âTen yearsâŠâ
âKid, youâre probably being strung along!â
Lynch shrugged. âI donât know. She said she had to go into the âMagic Mirrorâ to cultivate, which would take ten years.â
This question never really troubled Lynch. Whether Avery was sincere or just toying with him didnât matter muchâit was fine as long as it didnât disrupt his cultivation.
âMagic Mirror?â
Somda froze for a moment, as if recalling something. âAh, I see now.â
He explained, âIt seems your little girlfriend is highly valued within her family. She must have been selected as the next successor for cultivation. Otherwise, they wouldnât have entrusted her with the Magic Mirrorâa resource of such significance.â
Lynch nodded. âSounds about right.â
Somda continued, âJudging by the timeline, the next millennial cycle outside should be nearing. This is the perfect time to put her into secluded trainingâlooks like theyâre preparing her for the Blood Moon Day baptism.â
Blood Moon Day?
Lynch couldnât recall how many times he had heard this term already.
He couldnât help but ask, âMentor, what is this Blood Moon Day⊠Could you explain it to me, or are you unable to?â
Somda looked at him quizzically. âWhy would I be unable to?â
Lynch said, âI heard thereâs a rule in the Tower not to disclose it to apprenticesâŠâ
Somda scoffed. âWhat nonsense.â
He shook his head. âRelax. The rules donât constrain me here.â
After a pause, he elaborated, âBlood Moon Day refers to a celestial phenomenon in this world. Every thousand years, the moon in the sky turns blood red. That day is called the Blood Moon by wizards of this realm.â
Lynch asked curiously, âWhat happens when the Blood Moon arrives?â
Somda replied, âWar.â
Lynch froze.
Somda explained, âThe White Wizards and Black Wizards of the Ancient Ruins have established a rule. On each millennial Blood Moon Day, a war will take place. The outcome of the war dictates whether the order of the White Wizards or the chaos of the Black Wizards will prevail over these lands for the next millennium.â
Lynch was stunned.
Suddenly it all clicked. âSo, the Dark Era recorded in history also ended in this same way?â
âExactly.â
Somda nodded. âIn the previous millennium, the White Wizards lost the war, so their orderly rules were replaced by the chaotic rules of the Black Wizards for a thousand years. That lasted until the last millennium, when the White Wizards won the Blood Moon Battle and restored order for this current thousand-year cycle.â
âOrder and chaos.â
âThese are the core conflicts of this land. When that day arrives, every apprentice must make their choice.â
